Hi there my name is Dr R Schalkwyk and I was born and raised in Pietermaritzburg. I attended Woodlands Primary School and matriculated from Haythorne Secondary in 2003. I then completed my bachelor of dental Therapy at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UDW) in 2007. I went on to complete my bachelor of dental science degree at the university of the Witwatersrand in 2012, during my time studying I worked as a locum Dental therapist on weekends and during university breaks at a busy dental practice in the heart of Soweto (Kliptown). I then relocated back home to Pietermaritzburg to complete my community service in 2013. Over the past 8 years I have provided expert and professional dentist care to many patients. I am and will remain committed to providing the very best in advanced dental excellence.

Dental Implants & Dentures
A dental implant is a metal post that replaces the root portion of a missing tooth. An artificial tooth (crown) is placed on an extension of the post (abutment) on the dental implant, giving you the look of a real tooth

Root Canals
This treatment is designed to eliminate bacteria from the infected root canal, prevent reinfection of the tooth and save the natural tooth. When one undergoes a root canal, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed
Teeth Whitening
Over time, your teeth can go from white to not-so-bright for several reasons. The good news however is that yellow teeth can become white again through our whitening process

Dental x-rays are very important and are mostly done on your first visit. They allow your dentist to look past the tissue of your mouth, such as your gums, and into the deeper areas of your teeth and jaw bone. This allows your dentist to look for signs of oral health issues that may be invisible with a visual examination alone.
